Everything needs a routine to make sure it is in the correct order. There's a daily routine, workout routine and a weekly routine for almost everything. And of course, for skincare, we have our skincare routine.
The beauty of the skincare routine is not about the fancy products, but it is the steps that is perfectly organized by following the consistency of the products. Every layer has its function. Starting from a very light texture to the thickest one.
But if you are a beginner, how do you start?
You don't need to jump into the ten steps skincare routine. In the beginning, start slow and focus on the basics first; cleanse, moisturize, protect! Get ready with your notebook, and let's discover how we can build our skincare routine from scratch.
1. The first step is, cleansing
Before you put anything on your skin, it needs to be clean and clear from any dirt. Although face cleansing is pretty straightforward, there are a few things that you need to know to make sure you clean it properly.
i. The most important thing to do is choose the right product
Always remember the best cleanser is the one that doesn't dry up the skin. So, use a gentle cleanser with a low pH value of 4-6 pH value. Why low pH? Because our skin is naturally acidic. So, a gentle cleanser with low pH will help to maintain the skin's optimum pH level. Thus, it doesn't mess up with your moisture barrier.
You can also consider using NIHON's Soothing Facial Cleanser which can clean, refresh & hydrate your skin by including our tea-tree oil infused foaming cleanser in your am-pm skincare routine.
ii. Stay away from Sodium Laureate Sulphate
This ingredient will strip your skin off. The natural oil that protects the skin will diminish, and your skin will be irritated.
"A good cleanser does not give the tight, squeaky clean after cleansing feeling"
So here's how you do it. Cleanse twice a day for every morning and night. Do a double cleanse if you wear any makeup to avoid the dirt trap in your pores.
2. Slather on some moisturizer
The next important thing that you need to do is to moisturize your skin regularly. Do not underestimate the power of moisturizer because just one moisturizer can give many benefits to your skin.
"Hydration is the key to healthy-looking skin"
The outermost layer of our skin is called the skin barrier, and you need to protect it at all costs. So, it is a moisturizer's job to keep the skin healthy and maintain its elasticity. There are three types of moisturizers in general:
Humectant - It works by attracting and binding the water in the skin to the surface. So your skin is well hydrated all day! Usually, it comes in a gel-type moisturizer that is non-greasy and lightweight.
Emollient - It softens the dry and rough skin so your skin will appear smoother and softer. The dry skin will leave the open space between the cell. So, emollients like Ceramide and Linoleic Acid repair your skin barrier by replacing skin lipid and filling the gap between the cell.
Occlusive - Occlusive agents create a barrier on the skin surface to prevent water loss from the skin. These are good for dry skin as it delivers a shiny finishing. But, you should avoid it if you have oily skin as it might cause clogged pores.
3. Protection from the sun with sunscreen
After putting everything on the skin, of course, the last thing that you need is to protect the skin. You don't want every drop of your skincare wasted by the 696,340 km radius of the sun.
How much do you need to wear? When is the exact time that you need it?
Before choosing sunscreen, the first thing you need to consider is the SPF level. SPF or Sun Protection Factor is to measures how much UV gets through the skin. The higher the number, the less UV passes through. As we live in a tropical country, the best option is to choose SPF30 or higher.
Many thought that apply sunscreen is only for outdoor. But the truth is as long as there's sunlight, sunscreen is crucial. No matter you are indoor or outdoor, on a sunny or a cloudy day. It is because the sun emitted two types of rays which are UVA and UVB.
Consider using NIHON's water based sunscreen, which is the new generation non-comedogenic sunscreen provides high protection with a light, refreshing texture and guarantees no white casts
UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn skin and only reached the ground about 5%.
UVA will cause skin aging. The percentage of 95% is enough to penetrate through the window.
If we want to age like a vampire, make some effort! Wear sunscreen religiously during the daytime at home or on a gloomy day unless we are in a windowless room. Without sun protection, our skin will quickly expose the sign of aging like wrinkles and melasma.
That's all for the super simple steps of a basic skincare routine. From time to time, you can start adding on some extra like a serum once you have found the products that suit your skin in your basic routine. Remember, slowly but surely.
Well, it's not just for the beginners. If you prefer something that wasn't too time-consuming, you can always go for the basic routine. Nowadays, minimalist skincare routine is more popular with a shorter time consumption, yet, effective enough to treat skin concerns.
